"I am proud to be part of the group leading a historic move to reduce the carbon footprint of Tel Aviv University and make the institution more sustainable. The current climate crisis leaves no room for inaction. As a research and teaching institution, we have the ability to show the government and society the way toward reducing our environmental impact and ensuring a better future for future generations. It is possible, and we will do it," said Prof. Marcelo Sternberg, of the School of Plant Sciences and Food Security in the Faculty of Life Sciences and one of the leaders of the university’s carbon neutrality initiative.

The ceremony took place as part of Tel Aviv-Jaffa Municipality's "City-Business Alliance for Environment, Climate, and Sustainability" program, which began last year and aims to promote cooperation with centers across the city to improve capacities on environmental and climate-related challenges. This program is part of the city's broader climate change adaptation plan which also engages residents and local businesses. As part of the program, leading centers in the city, including Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center and the Azrieli Environmental Project, took part in examining pathways to optimize resources, reduce pollution, promote sustainable lifestyles and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. At the end of the process, the municipality awarded recognition to centers that demonstrated outstanding progress on sustainability.
